Scholars enroll in as many as four courses with other TIP students who share similar academic interests or career goals. The personal connections formed in these linked and reserved courses often continue outside of class and in many years to follow. TIP Scholars develop long-lasting academic and personal networks with their peers in the program and at UT.
Linked First-Year Courses
TIP first-year students are placed into a linked course cluster during their first semester. This cluster includes a required TIP seminar class (NSC 108) and an entry-level science class. These clusters are assigned based on major requirements and other schedule needs.
NSC 108
All TIP Scholars are required to take the TIP Scholars First-Year Seminar (NSC 108) during their first semester at UT. This class is included in all major clusters.
First Year Clusters

Calculus/UGS Cluster (optional)
This optional cluster is offered to students who score between a 55 & 69 on the UTMA and is taken consequently with a TIP assigned cluster. This cluster aims to provide additional support for Calculus through exploring effective thinking strategies.
- UGS 303 - Elements of Effective Thinking
- M 408N - Differential Calculus for Science
Restricted vs Reserved Courses
TIP offers restricted classes and reserves seats for its Scholars in highly-desired core first-year and second-year courses such as Chemistry, Biology, and Math. In addition, TIP provides staff, peer advisors, mentors, and a wealth of resources to empower its Scholars to navigate and trouble-shoot the complex process of registration.
Restricted
TIP restricted courses are courses that are only available to current TIP scholars and are taught by TIP-specific faculty. These courses are meant to foster a sense of community and belonging among first and second year students.
Reserved
TIP reserved courses are lower-division courses in which TIP reserves a certain number of seats to ensure that TIP scholars have access to courses needed for their degree.
TIP students who enroll in restricted classes have access to Collaborative Study Sessions (CSS)
